JewelMint Design Idea

JewelMint, one of my favorite sources of accessories asked for feedback from their fans on design ideas.  Of course I have an opinion on this!  Here's my thoughts on the matter:

I love semi-precious stones and would love to see a necklace with a carnelian-like stone in a gold setting. To the left is a sketch I did after seeing JewelMint's post on their Facebook page.

Orange is a hot color for Spring/Summer. In my design a pair of oval carnelian cabochons are featured in a gold plated setting. The bold pendant would be suspended from a 24" gold plated chain that has thick links. This would look great as a pop of color against neutrals, but I think it would also look amazing against a turquoise-colored top or dress

Cash In Hand

In my last post I announced that I was going to do a Closet Purge -- going through my clothes and jewelry, pulling out what either doesn't fit, doesn't flatter or just simply falls in the "I can live without it" category.  Several items were donated to Goodwill.  Some items were sold on Craigslist or Ebay.  But I also thought I'd research my options for selling some of these items locally at consignment stores.

I was happy to find some excellent options for cashing in on items that were just cluttering my closet and jewelry box.  First of all, I pulled pieces of 14K jewelry that quite honestly, I had never worn.  A couple of them were rings that belonged to my late mother.  While the sentimentality issue was a heavy one to come to grips with, I realized that my mother would have approved.  Times are tough and she would not have wanted to see my family and I struggling financially.  There are pieces of jewelry that I inherited from her that I will never part with, and they will eventually be passed on to my children.  But these other pieces were not doing anyone any good just sitting in my jewelry box.

The most reputable gold and jewelry buyer I know is David Levi of David Levi & Sons Jewelers.  His business is located in the Jewelers Exchange Building on 6th Avenue and E Streets in the Gaslamp neighborhood in San Diego.  When you enter the building on 6th Avenue, immediately turn right and enter his store.  Trust me, there are several gold and jewelry buyers in this building and in the neighborhood.  But if you want the most for the items your're selling you have to see David.  He's easy nice, knowledgeable and very well-respected.  He has the highest possible rating on Yelp.com.

For several pieces of costume jewelry that I wanted to sell, I found two options:  Dress to Impress, a Mission Valley consignment store and Flashbacks in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood.  Dress to Impress does not buy your items outright, but will take them on consignment.  Once they sell you receive a percentage of the sale.  It's not immediate cash-in-hand, but at least for the time being, they are taking up space somewhere besides my little closet.  As for Flashbacks, I felt a little intimidated at first walking into their store.  It's hip, funky and retro.  My 20-year old daughter Maddie would have felt much more at ease there.  But after overcoming that momentary feeling of being out of place, I was greeted by the very friendly Jessica, who put me at ease.  She bought a number of the jewelry items I had for sale and walked out with a nice sum of cash.

Across the street at Buffalo Exchange, I sold two a coat and dress -- both of which I had never worn.

Overall, I think it's been a successful mission.  Most women are guilty of buying on a whim, and having those items take up valuable real estate within their wardrobe.  Some of those items even have tags still hanging from them.  Get over the guilt and the idea that you'll actually wear it someday.  If you haven't done so in the past 6 months...or more generously, a year -- chances are you never will.  Get rid of it!  Donate it or cash it in.  You'll feel better, especially if you have some extra money because of it.

Closet Purge

This is an ongoing project that I've been working on for a couple of months.  Like many women I have a closet and dresser drawers crammed with way too many clothes and accessories.  In my former life as a closet designer for Closet World, I know that we really only use 20% of the contents of our closets 80% of the time.  I worked with clients who shamefully agreed with that statistic.  What's worse is that I've become guilty of that as well.  Not good, considering this year my husband and I downsized and moved into an apartment that we love, but that is definitely challenging our storage needs.  Though he's too sweet to call me on it, my husband must be wondering why his clothes occupy only a third of our shared closet space when marriage is supposed to be a 50/50 partnership.  This 20/80 imbalance also means that I have a bitch of a time getting dressed most mornings.  It's so cliche, but "I have nothing to wear!" pops into my head more often than it should.

So what's taking up all that space?  Well, there's a whole ton of clothes that I no longer fit anymore since I've gained weight over the past few years.  I had been holding onto a lot of these for mainly three reasons:
  1. They were great finds -- designer labels for a terrific price.
  2. Holding onto these clothes will motivate me to get back into shape so that I can fit them again.
  3. I'm too lazy to roll up my sleeves and do the work.  Pulling out the dead weight in my closet, sorting through what to donate and what to sell is a lot of work.
Well, I think I've finally come to the realization that I just need to suck it up and get over these ideas.  The results will be worth it.

  1. Each time I open my closet I'll have a clear idea of what my options are and know that whatever I pick will fit and flatter me.  That latter word, "flatter", is one I've had to learn about over time.  Even if something fits me, it won't necessarily look good on me.  Considering the fact that I'm short (5' 2 1/2") and have what's been referred to as a pear-shaped figure, a flattering fit is necessary.  If it doesn't flatter me I've found that I can wind up looking like a kid playing dress-up or looking just frumpy.  I'd rather avoid that, if possible.
  2. Money is tight.  I need to pay down debt and begin saving.  Knowing that I've converted my unused wardrobe into cold hard cash would give me the smart thing to do.

  3. Max Studio brown microfiber jacket.
Purchased on eBay for $6 (including shipping).
  4. If and when I do go shopping, I'll know what's missing from my wardrobe and what I need to purchase to fill those gaps.  A couple more jackets would be good.  Another pair of trousers.  Tops with more variety in color.  I've come to realize that a good chunk of my wardrobe is black, brown and grey.

Purchased on eBay for $39.99 (including shipping)
Knowing this, I'll remember in the future that I DO NOT need another brown dress...or jacket...or top, regardless if its from one of my favorite labels or not.  I do not need to dress like a Hershey bar.

And So It Begins

I did a Google search for fashion blogs not so long ago.  There are jillions of them out there.  I spent a few hours one weekend flipping from one to another, amazed at what's out there.  Tons of mainstream fashion blogs by well-known stylists and fashion e-tailers dictate upcoming trends and reiterate the timelessness of pieces like the classic trench and the tank watch.  I found them interesting enough, but the blogs I loved the most were by creative, "real" people who had an interesting hook:  how to style different outfits based on wearing the same dress for 365 days straight, making the most of your existing wardrobe -- no clothes shopping for an entire year, you get the point.  Real World Look Book doesn't have as clever a point of view..at least not yet.  So what are my goals here?  Learn about the blogging process first-hand.  Indulge my interest in fashion by sharing my wardrobe picks and wish lists.  Connect with like-minded women who might offer me some feedback and/or words of wisdom.
